Artist Statement

My photographs and collages explore, sometimes playfully, themes such as belonging, family, and languages. I use motifs (eyes, rays, clothes) playing around with what's visible, or not.
My collages contain photographs, drawings, writing, and more. An undertow of languages (from French to familial) and symbols frame my work. As a Gabonese woman, partly raised in France, I grew up in many realities: Gabonese, Batéké, French, Malian, Christian, Muslim. A “reality”, to me, combines cultural exposure and experience of something. Moreover, I invoke artists' works that resonate with my explorations : Zadie Smith, Sophie Calle, Milan Kundera. The accompanying texts develop from associations and reflections. I invite the viewer to reflect as well.

Presence / Absence

In Presence/ Absence, I showcase pictures of unseen sights in Parisian landmarks, focusing on blurry views, random corners, rays of light, which give a more personal experience of the city.

Blue Mesa Review published one photograph of this series: Betty Near the Moulin Rouge

Family Looks

Family Looks, my first series developed around the photographs taken during a Parisian trip to attend my favorite uncle’s wedding in 2007. It started with my fluctuating readings of the looks of wealthy cousins during the festivities. In this work, I wonder about the dynamics of performance, perceptions, and expectations in my family heightened during events. Using collages, I focus on the eyes and fashion by mixing bodies and places (Paris, New York, and Libreville).

Being a Stranger

In Being a Stranger—a series of photographs taken partly in England—someone looks straight at me (or my camera). Because I didn’t notice it at the time I took the pictures, it leads to having this delayed, always changing, communication with them. I use digital and analog photographs.
